Kingston Report 2019 – Michael Compton

The Laser Youth Radial Worlds in Kingston Canada was full of ups and downs; in wind strength and results. I started the regatta with two bad results leaving me in a tough position for the rest of the regatta as I couldn’t afford another drop. All I could remember thinking on that day was, ‘Jeez the fleet really looks different from here’ and clearly that different perspective helped as I constantly improved from that point on in the regatta. The qualifying series was pretty light and I was relieved when we got some stronger winds in the finals along with getting to race my WA teammates. I sailed probably my best ever final series coming out with 3 bullets and 2 top ten’s putting me up the ranks into 3rd after the final race. I really appreciated getting to train against Zac Littlewood and Stefan Elliot-Shircore in the lead up to the event with close competition which helped me to improve. I was completely stoked to take out the U17 world title and 3rd place overall. Thanks go to my parents and the home clubs of Fremantle Sailing Club, South of Perth Yacht Club, Ron Tough Foundation and the WA Laser Association for the support they have given me. Now it’s back to training hard for the Nationals, Youths and Worlds in Melbourne.
